My Name is Leroy Maurice
Thompson. I was born March 18, 1946 in Joplin Missouri. My Dad was in
the Air Force so we lived in Missouri, England, Germany, Texas, New
Mexico, Illinois, Florida, Massachusetts, and South Carolina.
We moved to South Carolina from Massachusetts when my Dad retired form
the Air Force.
My brothers Mike and Ronnie and I had formed a family band in
Massachusetts. We won a battle of the bands contest and were hooked on
music from that point on.
I started playing guitar at 13 years old and mostly was a rhythm guitar
player playing Buddy Holly, Elvis, etc. I had a good ear for harmonies
so vocals became important to me and my overall concept of a band.
After we arrived in Charleston (James Island), we felt the need to form
a band. We played around with a few guys and re-formed The Lancers, a
band we had in Massachusetts. On James Island, I ran into Steve and
Cleve Wiggins. We became friends and played together in different Jams.
My brother Ron graduated from James Island High and went off to college
leaving the band to Mike and Me. We moved to St. Andrews Parish and
added Wayne West on guitar and Wally Till and Don Cantrell on saxes.
Then Frank Taylor joined and played bass, Don Cantrell left and in came
Little Ricky. Now the band was Leroy, Mike, Wayne, Wally, Ricky and
Frank. We did various gigs around. We recorded our first record called,
"Cherry, My Love".
Jim Owens called us to do a teenage show for Channel 4 and as they say
the rest is Villagers history.
Back to me as a person.
After Wayne, Jeanne and I left the Villagers we worked for a short time
in a band called August. After I left August, I worked in a few daytime
jobs while I tried to connect with a band. I worked in numerous clubs
and recording studios in Atlanta doing jingles and whatever else was
available. I also worked with numerous R & B recording acts on the road.
I had done all I could in Atlanta so I decided after ten years to leave
and go to LA, NY, Nashville or Las Vegas so I could make a better
living. I had met a singer in a road band named Lisa who was from Las
Vegas. She and I hooked up and moved to Vegas. I’m still here after 28
years.
Lisa and I got married and had 2 children Aaron (21) and Sara (17), both
in college. Lisa and I divorced in 1999 after 18 years of marriage.
I am still a professional musician doing 8-10 gigs a month. I also
became a real estate broker and have owned a property management company
in Las Vegas since 1995. I’ll be 60 this coming March, 2006. Life is good.
